Equalizing Pressure in the Middle Ear
The use of an over-the-counter topical decongestant such as Afrin or Neo-Synephrine may help. Use two to three sprays into each nostril 30 minutes prior to departure.
A systemic decongestant (i.e. Sudafed) can be taken as directed 30 minutes prior to departure.
You may purchase a set of Ear Planes. These may be obtained either at our office or at any pharmacy in the area. These are specialized earplugs which assist the ear in equalizing pressure when flying.
It would be advisable to take a beverage on the plane with you. Repeated swallowing during take-off and descent will assist in equalizing pressure in the middle ear space.
